Movie Recommendation App design

Reel Recs

I struggle to find movies that match my preferences and moods. Existing movie platforms rely mainly on limited or generic recommendations that lead to decision fatigue.  So, I decided to create an App that helps remove frustration around finding a movie to watch.

Research Phase

User Interviews

During the discovery phase, I conducted user interviews to see how they currently manage their recommendations. I tried to identify their pain points and understand their preferences to find movies to watch.

What I learned

01 — Decision fatigue was a major pain point

Users spent significant time scrolling through streaming platforms before deciding what to watch.

Design response:
I introduced personalized recommendations and a “Surprise Me!” feature to reduce browsing effort.

02 — Users wanted social discovery

Users wanted to discuss movies and exchange recommendations.

Design response:
I introduced Community and Reviews into the navigation.

03 — Users wanted more control

Users wanted recommendations based on mood, genre, and preferences.

Design response:
I incorporated filtering and recommendation pathways.

Analysis

I used the red route analysis to identify and prioritize the most critical, high-frequency end-to-end paths that the majority of users take to complete core tasks in an application or website.

Design Phase

Wireframing Progression

I started the design with low fidelity wireframes showing rough sketches of various screens for the app. This helps create the basic user flows with placeholder texts. Then, I moved to Mid-fidelity and Hi-fidelity wireframes to finally connecting screens together to simulate basic user clicks and navigation paths.
